Night after night, a mattress absorbs moisture, skin flakes, and body heat – it's no wonder that odors can develop over time. Whether it's a musty basement smell, sour sweat odor, or the typical off-gassing of a new mattress: in most cases, mattress odors can be removed with simple home remedies. We'll show you which method works for which smell – and how to ensure your mattress stays fresh in the long run.
The short answer: For most mattress odors, a combination of thorough airing and baking soda helps: strip the mattress, sprinkle generously with baking soda, let it sit for several hours, and vacuum carefully. New mattresses lose their inherent smell on their own after a few days of airing out. Prevention is then important: air regularly, change bedding, and let the mattress breathe.
- Baking soda is the most effective home remedy for odors: sprinkle on, let it sit for several hours, then vacuum.
- A musty smell indicates moisture – consistent airing of the mattress and bedroom is crucial.
- The new smell of freshly unpacked mattresses is harmless and dissipates on its own after a few days.
- Prevention is easier than removal: air daily, avoid covering the bed, and regularly rotate the mattress.
Where do mattress odors come from?
The human body releases up to half a liter of moisture per night. Some of it evaporates through the duvet, and some penetrates the mattress. If this moisture cannot fully escape – for example, because the bed is made immediately after getting up or the bedroom is rarely aired – a warm, damp environment is created where bacteria and microorganisms thrive. We later smell their metabolic products as a musty or sour odor. If you sweat heavily, you should also take a look at our guide on night sweats and their causes.
Which smell, which solution? An overview
| Type of odor | Typical cause | Best measure |
|---|---|---|
| New smell after unpacking | Production-related off-gassing, exacerbated by vacuum packaging | Air out uncovered for 2–3 days – dissipates on its own |
| Sour sweat smell | Night sweats, bacteria | Baking soda treatment + wash cover |
| Musty-mildewy smell | Persistent moisture, poor ventilation | Vent intensely, fix cause, baking soda; check for mildew stains |
| Urine smell (children, pets) | Liquid has soaked in | Dab with water-vinegar mixture, dry, then baking soda |
| Smoke smell | Cigarette smoke in the room | Multiple baking soda treatments + airing out for several days |
Step by step: Removing mattress odor with baking soda
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is inexpensive, available at any drugstore, and reliably binds odors and moisture – without fragrances that would only mask the smell.
- Strip the mattress completely: Wash the cover and bedding at the recommended temperature.
- Sprinkle baking soda: Sprinkle the entire sleeping surface evenly and generously – about half a packet per mattress.
- Let it sit: At least four hours, preferably overnight. During this time, the baking soda binds odors and residual moisture.
- Vacuum thoroughly: Vacuum slowly and with some pressure using the upholstery nozzle until no powder is visible.
- Air out afterwards: Leave the mattress by an open window for a few hours before putting on fresh bedding.

For stubborn odors, the treatment can be repeated after a few days. Important: Never soak the mattress – too much moisture will worsen the problem. Our guide Cleaning a mattress shows how to generally proceed with cleaning.
Musty smell: Take warning signs seriously
If the mattress consistently smells musty, it's almost always due to a moisture problem – often a combination of infrequent airing, high humidity in the bedroom, and poor ventilation from below, such as with solid bed bases. In this case, also check the underside of the mattress for dark discoloration. If mildew stains or even mold appear there, odor treatment will no longer help – your health is at stake, and the mattress should be replaced.

How to keep your mattress fresh permanently
The best odor treatment is the one that isn't needed at all. Four habits make all the difference: First, fold back the duvet in the morning and let the bed air out uncovered for at least 30 minutes before making it. Second, air out the room daily with a blast of fresh air – our article on proper ventilation for a good sleep climate explains how to do this optimally. Third, change bedding regularly, and fourth, rotate your mattress every three months – the ideal occasion for airing. A washable mattress protector also keeps sweat and skin flakes away from the core.
The material also plays a role: Open-pore, breathable foams wick away moisture better than dense, heavy materials. The EvoPoreHRC premium memory foam of the Ora Ultra is designed for high air circulation and has a removable, washable cover – two properties that counteract odor formation from the outset, while the mattress automatically adapts to your body and sleeping position.

Frequent questions about removing mattress odor
How long does baking soda need to sit on the mattress?
At least four hours, ideally overnight. The longer the baking soda stays on the mattress, the more odors and moisture it can bind. Then vacuum thoroughly.
Why does my new mattress smell?
Freshly manufactured and vacuum-packed mattresses initially give off a typical new smell. It is harmless in tested products and dissipates within a few days if the mattress is left uncovered in a well-ventilated room.
Does vinegar help against mattress odor?
Yes, but specifically: A highly diluted water-vinegar mixture is suitable for dabbing urine or stubborn odors. Use sparingly, never soak, and let the spot dry completely – otherwise, a new odor will form.
When is an odor a case for a new mattress?
If a musty odor returns despite multiple treatments or if mildew stains and mold appear. At that point, the core is permanently contaminated – from a hygienic point of view, replacement is the better choice.
