Unpacking Your Vacuum-Sealed Mattress: A Step-by-Step Guide

Vakuumverpackte Matratze in Folie wird auf einem Holzbett ausgerollt

The box stands in the hallway, compact and surprisingly heavy. Inside is a full-fledged mattress, compressed to about a third of its volume. Most people unpack such a package only once every seven to ten years – and almost always make the same three mistakes: they open the film in the wrong place, they cut too deep, and they put the cover on the mattress too early. None of these are dramatic, but each one either costs comfort in the first few nights or leaves a damaged seam. With the correct sequence, the process can be completed in ten minutes. This guide will walk you through all the steps – from transporting it to the room to the first night.

The short answer: First, carry the still-packaged mattress into the room where it will be placed – after that, it can barely be moved. Place the package directly on the slatted frame, remove the cardboard, unroll the mattress, and only then carefully cut the vacuum film open on the top side. You will hear air entering, and the mattress will visibly expand within minutes. The full core height will be reached after 24 to 72 hours. Ventilate the room several times a day during this time and only put the cover on the mattress afterwards.

Key takeaways
  • First carry it to the destination room, then unpack – never the other way around.
  • Cut the film only on the top side and shallowly, never deep with a utility knife.
  • Full height after 24–72 hours, longer when cold.
  • Ventilating for 48–72 hours without a cover allows the new smell to dissipate.
  • If more than 1 cm of height is missing after 72 hours, contact the provider.

Preparation: what you need

The equipment needed is manageable: a blunt household scissors, a tape measure, and ideally a second person. You should intentionally avoid a utility knife – it is the most common reason for cut covers, because the cutting depth is difficult to control under tension. Also, check three things beforehand. First, the room temperature: Below 18 degrees, foam reacts sluggishly and expands more slowly. If the mattress was delivered in winter, first let the box sit in a heated room for four to six hours. Second, the base: The slatted frame should have a maximum slat spacing of 4 cm and no sagging or broken slats – more on this under Slatted frame and mattress. Third, the space: You need about 60 cm of free movement around the bed. Also, keep a large trash bag ready – cardboard and film take up surprisingly much space when unrolled.

The guide in seven steps

Step 1: Carry the sealed box into the room where the mattress will be placed. An expanded mattress measuring 160 x 200 cm is significantly harder to maneuver than the compact package. Step 2: Open the box at the top and pull out the rolled mattress. It is still in an outer transport film, which you can now remove – the inner, airtight vacuum film remains closed for now. Step 3: Place the roll centrally on the slatted frame and align it so that the head end faces the correct side. Step 4: Unroll the mattress. It now lies flat, but still compressed, on the sleeping surface. Step 5: Cut the vacuum film shallowly on the top side with the blunt scissors, starting from the middle. You will hear air entering, and the mattress will begin to visibly rise. Step 6: Pull off the film completely and dispose of it. Step 7: Open the window and leave the mattress uncovered.

What happens next: the timeline

Time What happens What you should do
0–10 minutes Most of the expansion Open window, leave mattress untouched
1–4 hours Core reaches 90–95% of height Continue ventilating, do not cover
24 hours Usually fully expanded Check height with tape measure
48–72 hours New smell largely gone Cover and first night
14–30 nights Muscles adapt Do not make a final judgment yet

If the mattress is more than about 1 cm below the specified total height after 72 hours, contact the provider. This may indicate too long storage in the compressed state.

Common unpacking mistakes

Unpacking in the living room and then carrying it. A fully expanded 180 x 200 cm mattress can barely be moved through doorways and stairwells – precisely the advantage of roll packaging is lost. Cutting deeply with a utility knife. There is little space between the film and the cover. A cut in the quilted seam is almost impossible to repair. Leaning the mattress against the wall to expand. It should lie flat so that the core expands evenly. Immediately covering it with a fitted sheet and encasing. Both hinder the removal of residual moisture and production odors; wait at least 24, preferably 48 hours. Using fragrance spray for odor. This only covers it up; effective ventilation is key – more on this under Removing mattress odor. Making a judgment after two nights. The body needs 14 to 30 nights for the muscles to adapt to a new sleeping surface, see Acclimatization phase. Prematurely disposing of the old mattress. Wait until the new one is fully expanded and checked – information on disposal can be found under Disposing of a mattress.

The new smell: what's behind it

Almost every freshly unpacked foam mattress has a slight chemical smell in the first few days. This is caused by volatile organic compounds that are produced during production and could not escape in the airtight packaging. As soon as the film is opened, off-gassing begins. In a well-ventilated room, the smell is usually no longer perceptible after 48 to 72 hours; in individual cases, it can take up to a week. The process can be accelerated by ventilating several times a day – 5 to 10 minutes with opposing windows completely exchange the room air and are more effective than a permanently tilted window. An increased room temperature of 20 to 22 degrees also helps, as volatile substances escape faster. What you should not do: place the mattress in direct sunlight – UV radiation can damage foams and covers. For very sensitive individuals, allergy sufferers, or in children's rooms, it may be advisable to let the mattress air out in a separate room for a week. Those who pay attention to tested materials when buying will find this issue less problematic anyway – see OEKO-TEX and harmful substances in mattresses.

Frequently asked questions about unpacking a mattress

Where should I unpack a vacuum-packed mattress?

Always in the room where it will be placed, and ideally directly on the slatted frame. After opening, it expands within minutes and can then barely be moved through doors or stairwells.

What is the best way to cut open the film?

Use blunt household scissors and cut shallowly along the top. A utility knife is the most common cause of damaged covers, as the cutting depth is difficult to control under tension.

How long does a mattress need to air out after unpacking?

Allow 48 to 72 hours uncovered, with cross-ventilation several times a day. During this time, residual moisture and production odors escape. In individual cases, it can take up to a week.

What if the mattress does not reach its full height?

First, wait 72 hours and check the room temperature – below 18 degrees, foam expands more slowly. If, after that, more than about 1 cm of the stated total height is missing, contact the provider.

Can I sleep on the new mattress on the first night?

Technically, this is usually possible after about 24 hours, but 48 hours is recommended. This allows the core to fully expand and the new smell to largely dissipate before you put the cover on the mattress.

Can I lean the mattress against the wall to expand?

No. The mattress should lie flat on the slatted frame so that the core expands evenly. Standing upright can cause the material to unfold unevenly.
